Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Mri for pets
This has been the hospitals biggest undertaking since opening 8 years ago. Finally we are proud to announce that early in 2017 we will be taking referrals for MRI's. This is Vancouver Islands only MRI for pets.
MRI studies have many indications and provides excellent imaging for spinal cord lesions, brain lesions, nasal lesions and musculoskeletal conditions and allow for significantly improvement of case management for conditions where standard diagnostics aids fall short.
Patients are required to remain motionless for 20-75 minutes depending on the necessary study, therefore general anesthesia is required. There is a designated MRI technician, veterinary technician and doctor assigned to every case. A board certified radiologist reads every case and the results are reported directly to the referring clinician with 6-24 hours based on the priority of the scan.
MRI availability now opens the door for advanced diagnostics to Vancouver Island pets and allows for more precise referrals to a board certified surgeon, reducing travel stress and cost to our Island patients. Though it does not replace the need for referral surgery, it does eliminate those cases which may be able to be treated through your local veterinarian, that would normally be referred off Island.
