Laser Surgery

Our surgical laser can be used anywhere that we would use a traditional scalpel. Laser allows for cutting and cautery at the same time.

Benefits of Laser Assisted Surgery:

  • Minimized Bleeding:
    • As it cuts, the laser beam seals small blood vessels. This drastically reduces bleeding, and drastically improves visibility at the surgery site. Better visualization of the surgical site allows the veterinarian to cut more precisely, avoiding unnecessary trauma to healthy surrounding tissues.
  • Reduced Anesthetic Time:
    • Increased visibility and reduced need for ligation/suture placement means faster procedures. Shorter surgery time leads to shorter time under anesthetic and  reduction in the risks associated with anesthesia.
  • Less Pain:
    • The CO2 laser beam seals nerve endings and lymphatics, resulting in less post-operative swelling and pain. The patient experiences a far more comfortable post-operative recovery.
  • Reduced Risk of Infection:
    • The "Sanitizing Effect" is a unique feature of the surgical laser beam, wherein it efficiently destroys bacteria in its path. The laser is also used in a non-contact mode, meaning that the laser tip does not touch the target tissue during surgery.
  • Faster Recovery Time:
    • Many factors contribute to reduced healing time including reduced risk of infection, less bleeding, reduced swelling, and less time under anesthesia.
  • Wider Variety of Procedures Performed:
    • Laser enables a number of surgical procedures that are not practical or even possible with a scalpel, such as removal of large tumors with clean margins.  Lesions in awkward locations such as inside the throat, nose, or oral cavity also become more feasible.
  • Advanced Accessories mean Better Results:
    • Our hospital uses an Aesculight laser, which has specific accessories that facilitate surgeries in difficult places (ie - inside the nose, mouth, eyes, ears, or at the base of the tongue)

Common Procedures that can be Performed using Laser Assistance:
  • Mass Removals
  • Orthopedic Procedures
  • Spays
  • Neuters
  • Cherry Eye Correction
  • Stenotic Nares Correction
Lasers are now frequently used in minor procedures, too. A rapidly expanding use of the technology is in removal of unsightly warts and cysts. Many pet owners were previously reluctant to subject their pets to the trauma of surgery, especially for such minor procedures. Now they can be performed quickly and easily, with little to no pain.
