MARLEY

February 2021

Marley was a beautiful 5 year old German Shepherd. She was a rescue dog that came from California. Late last year she began having difficulties with her eyes. She then developed an acute, severe lameness starting in February. After the lameness began, she deteriorated very quickly despite attempted treatment, and required ICU care.

Marley’s family loved her desperately, but could not afford to take her to a referral Emergency center for further diagnostics and treatment. We elected to make Marley a H.E.A.R.T Fund recipient, as she was such a young dog who had been so lively and boisterous before this episode. With these funds we were able to run blood work, take chest x-rays, and start Marley on IV fluid therapy with continuous vital sign monitoring.

Unfortunately, the diagnostics all pointed toward the same conclusion – Marely’s prognosis was grave, even with specialist care. Due to her travel history, it was suspected that she had a blood-borne parasitic or fungal infection that had slowly and silently grown inside her until her organs began to shut down. It was determined that an end-of-life decision was best for this sweet dog.

Despite this sadness, Marley’s family was able to determine the extent of her disease, and therefore know that they did everything possible to help their furry loved one by using the CVH H.E.A.R.T Fund.
