Annual Health Exams

and

Wellness Medicine

Coombs Veterinary Hospital recommends yearly health examinations. Pet owners often believe that vaccines are the main reason for annual examinations, when in fact many of our core vaccines are actually only administered every three years. Annual exams are one of the most important services we can provide, as they allow us to discuss healthy habits, preventative care, and to detect early signs of disease.  A full physical exam is performed from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail, including vital sign measurements.

An Annual Wellness exam standardly includes:
  • Heart and lung auscultation
  • Abdominal palpation
  • Mentation check
  • Skin and hair coat exam (flea and tick check)
  • Check of the eyes
  • Check of the ears
  • Palpation of all 4 limbs
  • Oral health exam

Following examination, recommendations may be made for your pet including blood work, fecal analysis, urinalysis, and/or internal/external parasite control. These tests or treatments are meant to ensure your pet is receiving the best care to maintain optimal health.

1 year in your pet's life is equivalent to 5-7 "human" years

Many things can change in this time, and our prime goal during a wellness check is to try and prevent problems before they arise.

Conditions that are commonly identified during Annual Wellness exams include:
  • Internal/External masses
  • Skin disease/Allergies
  • Lameness
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Internal/external Parasites
  • Congestive Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Bladder stones/masses
  • Ocular disease
  • Ear mites/infection
  • Dental disease
  • Liver disease
  • Anal gland disease
  • Hernias
  • Retained testicles

Is Coombs Veterinary Hospital Taking New Patients?

This is a question we get every day...and the answer is definitely YES!

Coombs Veterinary Hospital encourages clients to remain with one Veterinary clinic for their animal's wellness and urgent care as often as possible. This allows for continuity of care, as your primary clinic has immediate access to all of your pet's medical history.

If you have recently relocated, we recommend establishing a Veterinary-Patient-Client Relationship (VCPR) as soon as possible. This will include a transfer of all your animal's medical records so that we can know when they are coming due for wellness care. Having this relationship in place will prevent you from having difficulty finding care when and if your pet has an urgent health care issue. Appointment spaces are limited and all clinics will give priority to those animals with an established VCPR at their facility.

Coombs Veterinary Hospital will not see new clients without first receiving their medical records. This process can take time - sometimes several weeks. As such, we request that you provide your previous clinic's name and contact information when making your first appointment with us.
